Rising at the northern edge of the Maloalmatinsky ridge, Bukreev Peak (3,010 m) stands above the Butakovka Gorge, marking the final summit of this mountain chain. Its slopes descend into the Kotyrbulak, Butakovka, and Left Talgar gorges, offering views that perfectly capture the essence of the Northern Tien Shan.Formerly known as Pionerskiy Peak, it was renamed in 2007 to honor Anatoly Bukreev — one of Kazakhstan’s and the world’s greatest mountaineers. His achievements remain legendary: 11 of the 14 eight-thousanders climbed without supplemental oxygen. This one-day hike is an ideal adventure for those who wish to experience wild alpine nature close to Almaty, with rewarding views and a real mountain spirit.

Itinerary:

Almaty – Kotyrbulak Gorge – “Pioneer” Mountain Resort – Bukreyev Peak – Yelik-Sai Gorge.

Program Schedule:

07:00 – Meeting the guide at the hotel in Almaty. Transfer to the Kotyrbulak Gorge.

08:30 – Arrival to the “Pioneer” mountain resort. Gear check and briefing.

09:00 – Start of the hike. The trail follows the gorge uphill along the cable car line, passing a natural spring where you can refill water. From there, we climb to the eastern ridge toward the saddle. Here, hikers can choose between two routes — to the “Krasny Yar” landslide and down to Oy-Karagay Gorge, or continuing up the ridge toward Bukreev Peak. We’ll take the ridge route, stopping along the way for short rests and snacks.

11:30 – Arrival at the pre-summit ridge and viewpoint with panoramic views of Left Talgar Gorge. On clear days, you can even spot the highest point of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range — Talgar Peak (4,979 m). Rest, snack, and photos before continuing the ascent. The final section includes a few rocky stretches.

13:00 – Reaching the summit of Bukreev Peak (3,010 m). Rest and enjoy the mountain panorama.

14:00 – Descent to Nadezhda Plateau. Lunch and rest.

15:00 – Continue down the trail through Yelik-Sai Gorge, returning to the Pioneer resort area.

18:30 – Return to Almaty.

Required clothing and equipment

CLOTHING:

– comfortable stretchy long trousers or leggings
– T-shirt or shirt with long sleeves
– warm jacket with long sleeves (fleece or polartec)
– windproof thin jacket
– neck gaiter
– cap or panama
– thin gloves
– long thick socks
– comfortable mountain shoes (trekking shoes or boots)
– rain jacket or poncho

EQUIPMENT:

– trekking poles
– seating mat

ACCESSORIES:

– sunglasses
– sunscreen cream and lipstick
– headlamp

SNACK AND LUNCH:

– food for light snacks along the way (nuts, dried fruits, bars, etc.)
– thermos with hot tea (0.5-1 l)
– a container with drinking water (0.5-1 l)

ADDITIONALLY:

– personal first-aid kit (adhesive plasters, painkillers, individual medicines in the presence of chronic or other diseases)
